Many of Aretha Franklin's hits defined a modern female archetype: sensual and strong, long-suffering but ultimately indomitable, loving but not to be taken for granted. https://nyti.ms/2Pfqrk8 pic.twitter.com/UvNhkeUlQY

When Aretha Franklin sang “Respect,” the song that became her signature, it was a demand for equality and a harbinger of feminism, carried by a voice that would accept nothing less.http://nyti.ms/2Pfqrk8

Though Aretha Franklin's vocals had their roots in gospel, it was only part of her vocabulary. Here are 20 of Aretha Franklin's most defining songs.https://nyti.ms/2BilkwK

It had nothing to do with feminism, if anything it had to do with black rights. You people are always trying to push your bullshit agenda and engage in revisionist history. #NotToday

"Harbinger" means something that is a sign of something to come in the future, similar to "omen", but it may not have been the best choice of words to suggest that Aretha Franklin's performance of Otis Redding's "Respect" had #feminist implications. 🤣 https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/harbinger …

It wasn’t meant to be feminism... it was meant to be equal rights racially. The song was written by a man, Otis Redding.

I think the NYT is somewhat ineptly alluding to the fact that Aretha Franklin's performance of Otis Redding's "Respect" can be, and was, interpreted as a feminist anthem as it were.

Which makes perfect sense. I didn’t mean to insinuate it wasn’t a feminist anthem... simply that it wasn’t the original intent of the song.

Aretha Franklin’s music spoke for all of us in words we recognized with our hearts. There was never a time that playing an Aretha song didn’t lift my spirits. Peace and comfort to her loved ones. God rest her soul.
