“The toll is destined to grow,” said the chief of the Civil Protection Department. "All the rubble must be moved," he added, to ensure that any vehicles crushed beneath the wreckage were found.https://nyti.ms/2MqECEl

We'll see this in America soon if we don't prioritize not only putting Band-Aids on our infrastructure, but enhancing it!

how old was the bridge? and what materials were used for the bridge? and how fast were they build? was it really a accident or maybe something related to corruption?

In the 1960's and with an experimental technique patented by Riccardo Morandi, who planned the bridge. Apparently structural damages were extensive, and experts suggested tearing the bridge down rather than continuing fixing it.

Thanks for info. Whos decision was it to wait with that or to fix it further? or did they planed tearing it down too late?

They were going to start the next round of maintainance in a couple of months. Tearing it down was not politically popular idea, per cost and swriously harming Genoa's (a major port town) economy. Now they have to act.

popular idea? Right decisions are never popular. Now the harm was greater then by controlled tearing. Politically now should heads fall. Hope they act the right way. They could/should have start tearing one bridge and building a new one at the same time and now there is no bridge

The political heads have already been cut. The party who ruled Genoa from 1964 to 2017 lost the city last year, while the parties who ruled Italy in the last 25 years lost the government this year. We may be left with no way to punish them further.

Wait a minute! what are the qualifications of the building engineers who constructed this Genoa bridge and was the bridge tested for integrity and strength in the first place? Now 20 are killed with 13 injured, damage control will set in!!! sure!!!!!

"our highways are private although built by the state and maintenance is not done" What a nightmare! I hope Italy has a justice system that permits victims to sue. Extracting money from private interests for their failings is the only way corporations will respond to human needs.

this highway was built by the state 50 years ago. then they were privatized at the beginning of the two thousand years as a private monopoly. the compensation perhaps (and I stress perhaps) will arrive in 15 years. Meanwhile 35 dead and the number should rise

It is tragic when disasters happen and ppl die. It is inexcusable when ppl die because a structure is left to erode over time. And that structure had problems reported. #genoa
