When, exactly, was America a civilized nation?

I am completely serious. I keep hearing "Make America great again" from the right and "This isn't the America we knew" from the left. I'm 51 years old. I'm older than Section 504, a little younger than the Civil Rights Act, raised by people who remembered Jim Crow.

This nation has committed genocide and slavery, dropped atomic bombs on civilians, visited horrors on others around the world. Today the blood of our unarmed neighbors is spilled in the streets by cops.

This is the America I have always known, and I am not alone. I want a date. In what year was America great, or civilised? Let's stop looking back on a fantasy, and make America civilised FINALLY.

This is 100% true but it stopped being civilized the first day the white man landed the continent by killing millions and millions of civilized nations of native.

Was that before slavery, after Jim Crow, during the Interment of Japanese-Americans, when we turned away boats of Jewish refugees in the 30s or is this because of us taking 3-month-old brown babies from their Spanish-speaking parents? When *exactly* did we lose it?

Not to mention the only country to nuke another country, not once but twice, killing hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians and are proud of doing it.

The atomic bombings of Japan saved millions of Japanese lives. The hand to hand fighting in home islands would have killed millions of Japanese. Japan killed 10 million Chinese civilians. Cry me a river through Nanking.
