In Opinion Filmmaker Taylor Brodsky writes, “Do his father and I ask surgeons to drill into my son’s head and thread an electrode array into his cochlea, all for the sake of sound? We weren’t asking political questions. We were asking human ones.”https://nyti.ms/2ATwY0z

Is music beautiful? Are you hearing reality? Are you living in reality? Do people communicate through sound? Hearing is an immense value. You would be a terrible father if you wrote that off as mere sound.

Uh yes, you do. Just because you take sound for granted doesn’t mean your son will. That’s the benefits of medical technology.

Yes to the implant. If your child was born w/ one leg, would you deny them a wheelchair or prosthetic limb? A child born with a hearing impairment or deaf loses out on social interaction w/out implants or aids.

Yes. In the human experience, the only sense more closely related to memory is smell. That's why music "takes you back" to an event, relationship, achievement. Your child or partners voice, the ocean crashing, thunderstorms.yes, yes, yes. Even the sound of breaking glass at 3am.

Great heartfelt article. Personally I completely advocate for the implant and it’s life changing potential. It’s a personal choice. For parents of children I think you can give them that choice through the implant. X

Interesting because I am hard of hearing and when I put my hearing aids on I can hear everything around me. The slightest sounds to the loud obnoxious sounds. It is a very personal choice to get the implant.

If they can cure your disability and give you the ability to hear, which increases your chances of survival, then do it. If you don’t, then you cannot demand accommodations from other people or sympathy.

It is a wonderful surgery restoring sound in a silent prison. Of course you don't deny your son that chance at normal development.
