After more than 16 hours of deliberation, Argentina’s senate narrowly rejected a bill to legalize abortion. The vote gripped the nation as opposing camps fought to sway senators. We're in Argentina and spoke with people on both sides of the issue. https://nyti.ms/2MfvhPx pic.twitter.com/qeRO2b5yj6

Argentina is overwhelmingly Catholic and conservative. Many people, even those who are not religious, reject abortion on moral grounds. https://nyti.ms/2vQyLOv pic.twitter.com/Pa0fCggM2j

For instance, we met a gynecologist in Salta who was opposed to performing abortions. “I don’t want to do abortions. I didn’t sign up for that.” https://nyti.ms/2vQyLOv pic.twitter.com/VQQfj9c62m

But others say the lack of help intensifies suffering. “Suffering at the hospital, having to go through it alone because they don’t help you. It’s sad and ugly,” said a woman who looked for 20 weeks to have an abortion. https://nyti.ms/2vQyLOv pic.twitter.com/1d1xQKCA1J

Still, activists say the fact that the discussion of abortion came this far signals a shift in public opinion and is progress that cannot be undone https://nyti.ms/2vQyLOv pic.twitter.com/F19UqSHKaU

“Moral” grounds? To me, in 21st century society, it would be considered MORAL to allow women to do what they please with THEIR bodies. Why is it so hard for people to understand this?

Do you really believe that ? Based on what ? If so , our country wouldn’t be amongst the very few in the world, recognizing same sex marriage at the same label that “traditional marriage “. People in huge urban areas are not that conservative and tend to be more open-minded.

Which is irrelevant b/c legalization does NOT force anyone who does not want to have an abortion to have one. Women have a natural human right to hold absolute dominion over the own bodies.

The DNA of a fetus/embryo is unique, viable, alive & human. To stop it you must actively kill him or her. Yes, he or she even has gender because of DNA. Abortion kills living human boys & girls. That is science, not religion.

That is absolutely NOT true. DNA is NOT a human being. It is an acid.

DNA is a combination of acids that produce a biological signal that defines who & what you are when put into living motion. I did not say a human being is only DNA. An embryo is also not only DNA. She is alive, has a viable human DNA signal in motion & is therefore human life.

Here is what you are saying: DNA is acids. The acids produce a signal. The signal is a definition. The definition is of something that has been "put in motion". None of those things are a human being.

It's simply about chattel. It's about animal husbandry. Men will decide when a woman breeds, and the most important thing is to take control of that decision OUT of the hands of women. If men suffered pregnancy, abortion would be as common as wart removal.

If that were true, we wouldn't have legal divorce & child support. No, abortion serves THOSE men by allowing them to use & ditch women without consequence. Abortion serves evil men quite well, especially when society pressures & lies to women & tells them it has no consequences.
