I managed concert security for 13 years and never hurt a single patron. No matter how drunk or belligerent. We were trained in NON-VIOLENT crisis intervention and it's shocking to think an officer wouldn't have that same skill.

Unless the 11 year old was 6’11”, 300lb and brandishing an Uzi and a flamethrower, this cop should be fired, full stop.
-
Not only fired but charged with assault.

Had she even left the store?

Except he wasn’t “in blue” was he? He was off-duty, working as a private security guard, carrying and using police-issue stun gun. How is that even legal?

Wtf tell me a police officer couldn’t physically control a 11 year girl old without resorting to a taser..u would think a well trained officer would be physically fit and able to do such a task.. absolutely outrageous the officer should be stood down permanently..it’s just wrong
-
That’s the problem, they’re not well trained. Barbers get more training on handling out of control customers than cops do.
-
Sad ain’t it a fully grown man having to tase a 11 year girl to control her..what makes it worse is the fact it was for shoplifting..this officer must be stood down permanently..disgrace to the uniform..

Their defense in one news piece I heard was that they are permitted to use tasers on children as young as 7. No mention of maybe considering not using that level of force when a pack of Twinkies is the only loss involved the crime. The lawsuit will cost millions of Twinkies.
-
But are they permitted to use police-issue tasers while off-duty working their second job in security? He wasn’t performing in his role as a police officer it would seem, yet used police ‘equipment’. Odd that.
-
I've hired off-duty police in my job before. They did carry their weapons. The only time they used a taser, however, it was the on-duty responding officer they called for backup. That was an adult in a violent confrontation as well. We still got heat for it. So, I am not sure.
-
That would seem a procedurally more correct way of ensuring both public safety and even-handed safe policing. I still find it odd that equipment paid for from the public purse is being used in private employment.
-
That is an excellent point.
