To assemble the cast, Jon M. Chu, the film's director, sent out feelers across 5 continents. “I wanted this to be the ‘Avengers’ of Asian actors.”https://nyti.ms/2MhLfbU

For a while, Chu was disturbed by casting controversies, particularly over the selection of a half-white actor for the male lead https://nyti.ms/2OT5hrO pic.twitter.com/OEJgw0TXtY

Imagine being Asian and never really facing much oppression - you follow the rules and your parents are statistically upper middle class. You have to then make shit up to fit the PoC oppression narrative; "H-he pronounced my name wrong!!"

Do you know why? Because they make up 5.6% of the population. This show is relevant to 5.6% of the population. That's it. It's not racism. It's not prejudice. It's relevance.

We were too large for the narrative. The only part they had any interest in consuming were jokes on our behalf. Only useful for punchlines, fetish, exoticism, other. I don't know if this will be different. We'll see.
