What if a movie like "Black Panther," which many see as a legitimate best picture contender, receives a nomination for the populist Oscar but not for best overall picture?https://nyti.ms/2OUy3Z5

Just what the film industry needs. Movies being rewarded not because of their creative or artistic merit, but because they appeal to the lowest common denominator. The popularity of a film is rarely indicative of a film's quality. In most cases, the inverse is true. #Oscars

as someone who has watched every best picture nominee, outside of 5 that are lost to history and rare to find, i couldn't agree more. I feel as though this all goes back to the Dark Knight--that's when they expanded the field

By adding a new category, @TheAcademy signals that they want to reward outstanding achievement in cultural resonance and popularity. The "Best picture" of the year will always be decided by the Academy, but achievement in popularity & success is engaging and worthy of a reward.

Most intelligent comment on this thread-not that the bar is very high here. Academy can't win for losing.Blockbusters aimed at teenagers and young adults often look like video games. Popular yes-great art no. That said, those filmmakers should still be rewarded for home runs.

The trifecta is Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original/Adapted Screenplay!

Yes indeed, but movies meant to look like video games and appeal to the same audience don't fit into any of those categories.

Black Panther should be nominated in BOTH categories: Best Picture and “Most Popular” whatever that is. “A Quiet Place” may fall in the same bracket. #ridiculous #dobetteracademy

I think we all feel like they want to give this movie an Oscar but they don't want to give it best picture credibility. Which is bogus.

Black Panther was not an Oscar winning movie, even the actors who played in it didn't think so.

"Black Panther" was an okay, enjoyable entry in the Marvel Comic Universe films, but is NOT a "legitimate best picture contender".
