President Trump said his tariffs would raise sufficient revenue to pay down the national debt. Math is not on his side.https://nyti.ms/2KzzWHo

Even if they were, they're paid by US consumers in the end, so it's a tax, regressive in nature, to pay down a debt made much larger by the recent tax cuts for the wealthy. So, why would this be good even if true?

jfc I think you're the only other person making this point. yes, consumers would pay for tariffs - so it's US people paying down the debt. (what slays me is the tariffs harming farmers to punish chinese, so trump pays out $12billion which will be owed to the chinese)

kind of. except most people don't know that US consumers are the ones who pay trump's tariffs. but yeah, this looks (sadly) at best like a 3 card monty for most folks. (that said, trump managed to bankrupt two inviolables of profit: booze and gambling.)

If the average consumer doesn’t understand that tariffs are taxes on them, then, I say shame on them.

it seems like they don't, from what they say. it sounds a lot like they think other countries will pay.

I don't think he studied math. Everything he does costs lots of money increasing the national debt. He probably figures he can declare bankruptcy like he did 6 times in his businesses. #impeachTrump

No, tariffs are going to put U.S companies out of business thus increasing the deficit.

The numbers (or history) haven't been on Regan's side either. Decades after he reduced income taxes for the rich, the money they saved on taxes still hasn't made its way back into the economy of our shrinking middle-class. Will this round finish it off?

Reagan had the the one giant tax cut. he then raised taxes 11 times over his administration trying to stem the damage. Rs never mention the 11 tax hikes (nor the almost *tripling* of debt).

Cut taxes for the well off. Introduce tariffs for everyone. Allow inflation to rise. Deflate the dollar. Reduce effective national debt. Trump economics.
