Nuns in a convent breed endangered Mexican salamanders to make them into a cough syrup. They may be the only thing saving the species from extinction.https://nyti.ms/2OG30QJ

To be fair it appears the NYTimes are saving racists from extinction by employing them (I'm doing this with as many NYT articles as I can be bothered with)

Is breeding a species merely to kill them (one assumes they are not alive in the cough syrup) any better than extinction ? Debatable point, certainly from the salamanders' point of view !

How are they being saved if they are being made into cough syrup? Perhaps it saves some of them. Can salamander parts actually become effective cough syrup? Anyway, it is good to" save" endangered breeds.
