They are practically a pre-requisite. I don’t feel qualified to delve too deeply into the psychological explanation, but I will say that “rap” today is only about 10% sonic and 90% visual.

The fact that The New York Times is calling them "Soundcloud" rappers denotes the level of gravitas we expect from these guys. Also, face tattoos just look silly. Case in point, the above images.
