Nebraska will have its first execution in 21 years this month, and its Catholic, Republican governor is unmoved by the Pope's universal condemnation of the death penalty.https://nyti.ms/2OFCc3b

Can we stop pretending that the Catholic Church is in any way an arbiter of morality?

well unfortunately in my opinion there are people who deserve a death penalty ... extreme cruelty can't be cured

I agree that some people can't be rehabilitated, but with numbers like an estimated 4.1% of death row inmates being innocent, I just don't think the costs outweigh the benfits. Execution of innocents is murder.

Of course, this is why the death penalty should be executed only in extreme cases and only if there is indisputable evidence that the person is in fact guilty of the crime

News flash failing @nytimes The Pope has NO dominion over American law. And like it or not, a Catholic must follow the same law as a Protestant or Jew or any other religion. So stop with your activistusm and mockery.

Huh? I am opposed to the death penalty and I am a big “fan” of Pope Francis. But am I missing something? Why should the governor be influenced by the teachings of the church? Church and state are separate.

Because in this case, the NTY agrees with the Pope's idea. Obviously. Yet another great example of that biased, dishonest media you hear about. PS. Don't hold your breath to see similar coverage of abortion.

If he separates his religious views from legislation consistently then I can respect that. If he's picking and choosing then not so much.

Sure. But I don’t want any religion governing me. And while Catholics aren’t that Influential, I am affected by fundamentalist Christians. It was a strangely worded headline. .
