Dozens of our international readers said they were surprised to learn that the freedoms that many children abroad take for granted aren’t universal in the United Stateshttps://nyti.ms/2OEdUqh

When I was 7 (in the 70s), my mother sent me on my own the 6 blocks downtown to but her something at the department store. I survived and did a lot on my own when I was a kid. What happened to us, America?

I‘ll never forget the Canadian colleague who was astonished that I let my kids run and play in our garden unobserved. Mind, it was my bloody own garden!

In 2017 we were visited by friends from Texas. They loved German playgrounds. They said with all the wood and sand and things you could fall down from - unimaginable in the U.S. My kids went like:pic.twitter.com/rnL3kGT95a

It wasn’t like this here in the 70s and 80s when I was as a kid. We roamed all over nearby neighborhoods and weren’t monitored 24/7 like kids today. Today my mom would be reported to social services. Kids are a lot less independent and social then we were.

In many rural areas of the world, children beginning from 5-8 years old are allowed to handle machetes. They appear to be competent. (Although there is the possibility the kids that handle their machetes incompetently are no longer out there in plain view.)

Oh, an Asian racist can’t get a job elsewhere? How sad. But they can certainly get a job here in the US, at your establishment.

Isn't that always the answer "so just go away...". How about maybe they're right and we're too protective, our kids play video games all day and parents don't parent here? Maybe we could learn something by listening

If America was a homogeneous high trust society again we could do this. Isn't diversity wonderful?

you tell me. Highest trust societies are usually those with the where most people have common values and common ancestors.

Most of us who are not ruled by our fears or the fears others are trying to feed us also allow our children to go to the park alone, go to the store alone, movies alone etc. Our kids are not afraid, but they are aware that life requires them to be aware of themselves.
