Cat videos are so popular on the internet that they’ve become universal shorthand for the internet itself. Or at least they represent how we used to think of the internet. https://youtu.be/Tg7d__thliQ pic.twitter.com/QIYTtEq70K

They represent chaos without consequence. Cats represent the internet as an apolitical playground where crazy stuff happens, but one that’s divorced from serious concerns of life. https://youtu.be/Tg7d__thliQ  (Earlier version of this tweet had the wrong video clip. We’ve deleted it.)pic.twitter.com/WyXCGCCGYW

But lately? We’re seeing more and more dogs on the internet. And this tells us something about how the internet itself is changing. Dogs represent this professionalization of the internet. https://youtu.be/Tg7d__thliQ pic.twitter.com/CH7CpXKU7E

Dogs can be dressed up and made to perform for their audiences in a way that cats just won’t. Maybe it’s not a surprise that we’re also increasingly turning to dog content at a time when social norms are degrading. https://youtu.be/Tg7d__thliQ pic.twitter.com/IJpXjSqWVV

On a scale of 1-10, how high are you right now? And if you say anything lower than a six, I’ll know you’re lying.

Or-hear me out on this-maybe it’s just because roughly 85M US households own pets. (Many own more than 1.) We’re a nation crazy about pets. These videos just make us smile, unlike most of the rest of the internet..which basically sucks. But I’m sure your explanation works, too.

We need more photos of bunnies! They are all over Instagram! Bunnies do so many cute things and are very calming animals. Dogs and Cats are boring in my opinion unless they are dubbed into memes showing them driving cars or wearing clothing.
