New Jersey, in a first-of-its-kind initiative, has set aside millions to pay for community journalism. "It’s one of the smartest investments that government can make to protect our democracy and our rights.”https://nyti.ms/2Ao4jR7

Quality community journalism is vital. But what protections will be in place to ensure that this does not become “state-sponsored” in the sense that the funding could be politically weaponized?

This is a great idea! Most people are very uninformed about issues in their communities and decisions are often made without public input. Coming from an urban planner, i would love to see more initiatives like this.

Because it is not beholden to large corporations or special interest groups, and if managed correctly (as they discuss in the article), the funding source will not affect the coverage either.

Not even the not beholden part, though that’s legit. But “good” journalists whether local or national are far more independent and fair and professional than most people give them credit for.

Agreed, but unfortunately the current trend is to just call anything unflattering Fake, because then you don't have to address the actual meat of the argument. Hope America can figure out, it boggles my mind that there are people out there calling all journalism fake.

A sign of complete and total lack of professionalism and ethics in journalism reducing the profession to mere gossip. I never will consent to my unknown neighbors reporting on me or anything for that matter. Time for an ethics investigation into criminal wrongdoing.
