“It wasn’t ‘I’m racist and I want to glorify slavery,’” one Civil War re-enactor said. “Nobody really thought a lot about the social reasons of why the South went to war."https://nyti.ms/2On7dZo

"The SOCIAL reasons"? Oh my god, people sure twist themselves into rhetorical pretzels in order to pretend the Civil War wasn't fought over the right to own humans.

If only we had a time machine so that woke ppl like you could have explained that to poor white sharecroppers who didn’t own slaves and went to war in the mid-1800’s, I’m also concerned they had a poor grasp of trans rights

There are a plethora of speeches and written correspondence by leadership of the confederacy to prove otherwise. It was 100% about believing blacks were inferior and making sure they kept them “in their place”. Read a book.

Making one off payments for black people and having a "slave for life" was the underlying social reasons for why the south went to war. Thanks to great people like Abraham Lincoln and General Ulysses S. Grant, that the US grew into a state of inclusion for all.

Slavery isn’t / wasn’t a “social” issue; it’s an economic issue - and much more importantly - a moral issue. Please change headline to: “history enthusiasts” seem to care little about actual history and more about playing with toy guns.

The Democrat-led South went to war because they refused to end slavery as it would destroy the economy in the South and detested Lincoln for introducing the notion of no slavery in the westward expansion. This is history, this is factual. Read the Congress archives. QED,
