The issues that are real are leftover vector DNA eg with Amp resistance.

...and the risk is?
-
Nope, you can use resistance markers in selection step for any breeding method (as long as you don't use it in the production step) and it won't be counted as a GMO. Many studies show that those markers are safe and AMP resistance is already widespread. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17436060
-
Yep but that was something we had to realize through research.
-
I don't think anyone here is against research. The problem is that the end product (what is being changed) is not the thing being regulated, but the breeding method. I think the same genetic changes should be regulated exactly the same. Regardless of method used to make it.
-
Agree. But given the latest papers on possibly wider off target issues w CRISPR we also need to investigate this further before releasing it to alot of pipelines......
-
Did you mean the paper that got retracted? https://retractionwatch.com/2018/03/30/nature-journal-retracts-controversial-crispr-paper-after-authors-admit-results-may-be-wrong/ … CRISPR is not GMO since it does not involve recombinant DNA technology (well, until the very latest EU decision made it GMO). I am 100% in favor of regulation based on what actual genetic changes were done.

Thank goodness the Europeans have good sense on this and care about human health, food security and the environment.

Yea, those Europeans, they ban the use of deadly poisons on crops too, cuz they kill pollinators. But Monsanto & Dow say that poison doesn't really hurt us, & they wouldn't lie, right? What do Europeans know.

They're not going to buy US agricultural products...they know the difference. US policy gives free rein to these products.

My understanding its not the original crops, but crops containing genetic material artificially altered to reproduce.
