"Wine in American culture has long been a synonym for snobbery. I’m sorry to say that wine culture has partly brought this on itself," @EricAsimov writeshttps://nyti.ms/2L9G26m

The quote itself is worth making fun of. I waited tables at an upscale restaurant when I was in law school and knew nothing about wine. Still don’t. I answered, “it’s slightly oaky and medium dry” to every wine question and was always complimented on my excellent selection.

In a genuine double-blind study, majority of "wine connoisseurs" won't be able to distinguish between a cheap, moderate & expensive brand of wine.

The wine market is broken. Nowhere else could you get away with charging double or more for an equal or worse product

Snobbery does not depend on objects or activities, but on human attitude. Experts often have to justify their existence. 😕
