Maybe, the most important battles for wealthy white men are not always the most important battles for the poor and/or minorities.

Or maybe identity politics is divisive(clearly important to white males on the right) and being used to tear society apart because most people dont know the difference between justice and equity so they cannot effectively counter criticism of supposed hippocracy from the right...
-
The whole argument against so-called "identity politics" appears to revolve around allowing ppl who don't know or won't admit that they have racist/sexist/xenophobic/etc. beliefs to pretend that no one else sees those issues as serious problems in order to win their votes. Nah.
-
The whole argument for it seems to revolve asserting that any members of historically oppressed groups are by definition free from all those very same isms to pretend that no one else can speak to any disagreement on those issues.
-
I'm not sure who's pretending that's true. I think some of the confusion stems from terminology, perceived degrees of systematic oppression, & uncertainty about what should be done / how ppl should feel. I have shit to do, so I'm going to leave 1 & 2 for now. 3 is when the big

feelings come in for many ppl, & those seem to trend toward guilt, denial, & anger. First 2 are useless, & the last is only useful if it's directed at dismantling inequitable systems. Use what you have to lift others up, & they'll likely do the same for you. No one has to fall.
-
I will tackle 1 & 2 tomorrow.

I mean this in the kindest way possible- please don't

Just have to say, as an Indian, that Apu doesn't offend me at all. The accent's dodgy, but the character's sweet and lovable and decent and human. A "minority view" on this thread, I see, but hey. (See what I did there?)
-
Yes, you are a minority in that you're one of the few Indians on twitter who don't realize that virtue signaling to Whites is not in your best interest in the long-term. Literally everyone who liked your comment is a White dude lol.
-
And they are probably using the comment as evidence that “Indians don’t have a problem with Apu.”
-
Interesting that you think you know what's in my interest, and that you think I'm the one virtue signaling.
#irony -
There's a reason why "As an X, I am not offended" meme exists in Asian-positive circles on the internet. There's a reason why nearly everyone who liked your comment (that I checked) when you initially posted it was White. Who am I virtue signaling to?
-
Apu is an Indian character, if anyone's going to be offended by him it's principally other Indians, like me. So I'm expressing my opinion. I'm not alone either. I don't see the problem. Are you telling me I should be more offended, or I should stay silent?
-
They're just telling you to think a certain way - their way. That's pretty much all the Left does.

I, personally, enjoyed laughing at stereotypes, until I learned that many were not laughing with me at the racism, but we're actually laughing at the target. That's not funny. The audience often defines the art. Groening needs to learn that, too.

Like the fundamental things that apply (one being a humble sense of humor about our shared humanity) , keep fighting the good fight, never change Matt

-
“Our shared humanity” that enables the powerful to enact demeaning stereotypes with complete immunity the sake of a laugh, God yes what a beautiful world.

Who raised you?
