The USMNT not qualifying has set us back an entire generation. The pay-to-play youth structure set up in the US is also a big barrier holding us back

Football is the most popular sport in every single country in the world. Except in the US, where they call it "soccer". What does that tell us about the US?

So you think if they called it Football it would make it more attractive to kids? That can’t be your point, surely?!

A football by any other name would be as round, as Shakespeare said. Except in the US of course. I was just joking. We do a ton of different sports, you do a ton of different sports, we're all happy.

But it shouldn't be. Majority of football players come from poor, working class or (at best) lower middle class. Just look at brazilian players or Luka Modrić. When I was a kid, all we need to play was a ball and goalposts we made from sticks, backpacks or hoodies.

The expense (club membership)of soccer is high especially with multiple kids playing. Practices at times that conflict with parent working schedules. If you are a single parent it’s hard.

Anyone who calls football soccer should not be playing this beautiful game, Maybe you Americans should just stick with your violent game of rugby with helmets (also called "American Football" ) and leave the beautiful game of real football to the rest of the world @nytimes #USA
