“We’re scientists. We are there to learn about the animals,” said a herpetologist who saw the presentation. “We are not there to be subjected to pictures of half-naked women holding the animals.”https://nyti.ms/2NlgLma

Too bad this same article still names male PhDs “Dr” and female PhDs “Ms”. We’re Doctors too, @nytimes!

How do the photos affect the merit of his scientific work?

More importantly: how does showing those photos affect everyone else's perception of those students? Will they be taken seriously, or have their careers been tanked? This isn't just risque photos--it's shitty mentoring and a failure to advocate for his own students.

Unsurprisingly, that failed to answer the question of how it affected his scientific work for which he was being awarded. I understand you are easily offended, but that has little to do with his work.

Part of scientific work is to mentor trainees. Why can't you trust the judgement of those who attended the meeting and raised the initial complaint? What benefit is there to making an undo fuss about it?

I know it’s ridiculous that male professors are still sexually harassing young students

Harassment, misconduct, discrimination and abuse of power by male and female professors go beyond sex, age and gender. Yes, ridiculous but more widespread than we think. We must prepare young academics to exercise power responsibly, especially at top-ranked institutions.

this behavior is way more prevalent in white, cis gendered, heterosexual men and instead of teaching students to grow up to use their power wisely, why don’t we stop awarding harmful behavior in senior scientists?

Trickle downs don’t work - this behavior must be stopped at the top. We can’t wait it out until well behaved scientists gain power

I don’t disagree with you. Let me be clear: yes, misconduct must be stopped at all levels, now, and especially at the top. But you should also consider all those weird/troubled young scientists who will eventually reach seniority and abuse their power, that must be prevented!

Weeee! Let's flippantly meme and/or perpetuate the problem by continuing to disseminate the images in question, rather than trusting the judgement of a room full of people who saw it happen.
