How are Amazon third-party sellers getting away with selling ordinary books for a hundred times its normal price? And why do they do it?https://nyti.ms/2uqAuKt

Holy cow. I just went on Amazon and found one of my paperbacks listed for over $2,000. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0073AHM3I/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_hsch_vapi_tpbk_p1_i1 …

Money laundering. Person A lists a used paperback for $9,000. Person B buys it. Looks like a simple business transaction, but $9,000 in cash has just been moved.

I sell online. Sometimes when out of stock, I simply put an exorbitant price that no one would pay, rather than delete the listing. The rest of the time, I'm cleaning my russian paid troll money ;-)

Y'know, maybe just don't buy a product if you think it's overpriced. Not like this is something that needs legislation, this works itself out.

At the risk of stating the obvious: when I see something like this I just don’t buy the book. And then it turns out some library has a copy I can borrow. Problem solved.

@DavidStreitfeld I still don't get why this is done? Hoping for an accidental one click buyer? Money laundering?

Garage sales in USA are more regulated by our government—than are third-party sellers on Amazon, even if in China selling us broken junk, according to an analyst a few minutes ago on CNBC’s Worldwide Exchange. #SEC #FTC @realDonaldTrump #AmazonPrimeDay #AmazonPrime #Amazon

First thing that comes to mind is it is a way to transfer funds for illicit purposes. List the item and send the URL to the intended person. Not sure what they could stuff in a book that is that valuable. We can guess.

It's automatic algorithms that try to outprice other listings. They get stuck in a loop bumping prices up.

They also dishonestly quote MSRP prices way above the actual MSRPs so people will think they are getting a great deal. I complained to Amazon about this and received no response.
