After my husband died, I had to get a second job. Sometimes I have 3 jobs at a time.

I agree they should get paid more, but it sounds like most are bad with money. 40k for 9mo of work? C'mon.

What makes you an expert on what is REQUIRED to be up in a classroom in this "performance pay" education system? Admin literally walks thru with a clip board marking off if you don't have it. We get $100 PER YEAR to spend. I spend 3X that much buying for kids that come w/nothing

And that's BEFORE feeding them because they have no food @ home and hugging them daily because they have no one else in thier lives that understand nurturing affection

You want the 2nd or 3rd job story? Wouldn't a teacher without a 2nd job be more of a " man bites dog" story?

As a teacher, I know how much of my own money and how much of my co-workers’ money is used for supplies and materials for our classrooms and students. Teachers are constantly going above and beyond to help children grow. Thanks @nytimes for bringing attention to this situation!

My wife and I lived with roommates for the first three years of our marriage. We also bought a house at the lowest part of the recession and sold it five years later at peak market for a $100k profit. They weren’t traditional second jobs, but they helped to pay off school loans.

Working during the summer doesn’t count as a second job. Most people work during the summer.

Managing a bar and tending bar there as well. And day camp over the summer. Still barely paying off student loans. Always buying supplies for something.
