What kind of article doesn’t even mention the tension over this tradition? A bride asking a bridesmaid to pay hundreds of dollars for, in general, seriously marked up polyester dresses that may or may not be reusable, to just participate in the event is quite odd.

If you can't afford to buy a house, the total cost for the wedding should be relooked. Perhaps, consider a nice, small dinner with your close family and a pastor. E.g. a total cost of 10,000 dollars for a wedding is too much.

When we got married, we were in grad school, so not much money (and no desire) for a big, expensive wedding. There was a total of 13 of us, lovely outdoor ceremony, nice upscale dinner. Just a nice dress and linen shirt. So many of our family have said it was the best wedding.

The amount spent on superfluous parties (often in destinations requiring purchase of flights and hotel rooms) is ludicrous and unnecessary. Also, tell your bridesmaids “no gifts,” they are already spending their time, money, and holiday allowances supporting you.

Save money by just buying a gift certificate to a divorce lawyer. $25 should be sufficient if the bride has enough friends

This whole bridesmaid & gawdy gowns is ew. I gave mine a few colors (everyday reasonable colors) & told them to get dresses they would wear anywhere. No gowns. I got them cascading flower arrangements. The dresses were a background.

Not everyone looks or feels good in a particular dress. I wanted them to feel good by what they had on of their own choosing. Having them pick their own was 1 way to assure that.

You aren't much of a friend if you ask them to be part of your day and they have to go broke to be THAT girl. Screw that. Be a thoughtful human being. Not some out of control princess wanna be
