Oh, the story I could tell regarding my 96-year-old great aunt who was forced into Memory Care (which was more expensive) even though she is sharp as a tack and put in hospice ($) though no diagnosed terminal illness. /1

After taking her off her meds entirely, except for “painkillers,” her blood pressure spiked while I was visiting. Rushed her to hospital—despite the facility urging us not to. The ER doc didn’t know how she didn’t have a stroke. /2

Attending asked why she was on hospice and in memory care because she was in great shape (once they got her back on her blood pressure meds). We moved her to another facility where they take wonderful care of her. /3

Pursuing suit against assisted living facility. My aunt wasn’t actively dying, they were trying to kill her. THIS is how our elderly are treated in this country. /end

Yet another example of why I am
#caringforparents myself even though the task is brutal. Glad your#aunt has you.
Hope auntie is doing better. #caregiver#Mom#Dad#love#health#healthcare -
If I didn’t live in a townhouse, where all the bedrooms are upstairs, I would bring my aunt to live with me, too.

If youre upset by this, understand that the only thing that will fix it is to INCREASE reimbursement to the SNFs. That means an increase in taxes. They’ll close their doors or stop accepting anything but private pay (read: wealthy people). With an aging pop, this will get worse

There's lots of topics we should be upset with that a simple tax and expenditure would fix. Taxes are not the problem, waste is the problem. I don't see investing in senior care as a waste.

They receive Federal funds, where is the congressional oversight mandating staffing requirements???
@HHSGov@GOP#VoteBlue2018 -
I cannot speak to current requirements, but I worked in nursing homes through High School & College. Low pay, low experience=low staffing. Federal or state inspections were annual at best and only more frequent if someone had the guts to file a complaint. Very sad.

I started as nursing home aid in 1971. The staffing has always been inadequate. Staff were sent home if the census dropped- there was never any intention of providing safe care. Why aren’t NH under same regulations as hospitals?

You know who makes great caretakers for the elderly? Immigrants.

Disagree with the statement made about the five-star rating system. Just like all 'rating systems,' they are typically ALL exaggerated. It is not fair to just blame nursing homes and take away from all the valuable assistances and service they provided to our friends and family.

I'm a nurse & I've worked in a few different long term care facilities. Staffing is always an issue. Especially at my current employer. At times its 2 CNA's for 50 residents. Administrator is fully aware, but its cheaper to pay OT than to get agency in. And they stay underbudget.

My grandmother has had exceptional care at her nursing home. She has developed very close relationships with her nurses, and even considers them her friends.

If we really loved our neighbors as ourself, would we reunite refugee families? Provide equitable healthcare and education to all? Shrink income and wealth gaps? Restore Puerto Rico? Abolish the death penalty? Increase Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid? Think about it!
