Why England will win the World Cup: • England is healthy, rested and young • England is great at set pieces Why England is doomed: • England does not have an elite playmaker • The English media say England should winhttps://nyti.ms/2zgxNQw

Should be England ‘are’ not England ‘is’. You’re talking about a World Cup squad not a single bloke.

Ah and here we have a prime example of the grammatical differences between British and American English. The NYT is an American publication, so they are using the American style where collective nouns almost always take the singular.

Although actually I should probably correct that a bit, since sports teams are actually an exception to this, generally. The NYT specifically refers to teams with the singular as a matter of style.

The African diaspora that we generously loaned to France will beat Belgium and go on to win the World Cup. (England is playing their last match of this world cup today.) Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
