At least tulip bulbs weren't consuming vast amounts of electricity and emitting 20 megatonnes of CO2 a year to no useful purpose.https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/jan/17/bitcoin-electricity-usage-huge-climate-cryptocurrency …

For sake of comparison, what is the energy consumption for extracting other currencies such as gold and silver?

Newswire reports 475 million GJ per year, or 54 megatonnes of CO2; BTC market cap is currently $114bn compared to $7.7tn for gold, so it seems like it takes around 24.8 times the energy to mine $1 in BTC than it does for $1 in gold.

Indeed, and just to cover all my bases as someone will say I should use yearly production rather than market cap: 3,150 tonnes of gold (in 2017 - $127bn in 2018) vs 700,912.5 BTC (in 2017 - $4.5bn in 2018) which still yields ~10 times the energy per $ for BTC

the original purpose of crypto currency was to liberate money from control of the Federal Reserve. this article demonstrates how pointless it was for people to believe such a thing would happen. now people have to be convinced of why they should use them.

the competing crypto currencies reminds me of why paper currency was necessary to begin with: to stop people from having to decide whether to be paid in gold or silver coins.
