A court has ruled that the U.S. Postal Service must pay $3.5 million to the sculptor whose replica of the Statue of Liberty, which sits in Las Vegas, was used on a stamphttps://nyti.ms/2KBDVbd

What was the problem for the postal service to send an office photographer and take a picture of the big one in NY or even the original (actually in France)? A lesson in not using stock photos for something so visible.

The original is actually in New York iirc. The plaster that was used to mold it is in a museum in France however.

Why am I not surprised about the US Postal Service making a stupid mistake, and then trying to cover it up afterwards.

interesting. I thought the photograph's author (the photographer) had the copyright. Not the subject, which happens to be a work of art on public display. I'd love to know how this works, but I'm not going to click on this #FakeNews source ;)

The issue is that the replica has artistic merit and therefore has a copyright on the replica and all derivative works.
