As a 5-year-old, he was placed in a holding pen with his brother and sisters, while immigration officials decided their fate. That little boy, born Israel Beilin, would grow up to become Irving Berlin, who composed “God Bless America.”https://nyti.ms/2MHxTT0

The point, for those who missed it, is that most immigrants truly love the United States and many appreciate it more than those who were born here. Also, that they make valuable contributions to American life. We should treat them humanely and show compassion.

So, are you saying that holding children in pens is a good thing, because one of them might grow up to be another great American composer? Or what?

That's ironical for a child, Israel Beilin, put in a cage by immigration officials, to compose"God Bless America". WhatSelflessPayBack!!!

How would Irving Berlin and his family be treated today as immigrants? We know the answer. Trump would say they are "animals". Separate the kids and deport, that is if the children can ever be found and matched to their family.

If it wasn’t for immigrants there wouldn’t be an America. They are our history makers, homemakers, doctors, lawyers, and the people who came here yearning to be free of religious and political persecution. Why are we now persecuting these people? Shame!

And his family was released, together to immigrate. FUCK YOU and your misleading headline, for implying that placing children in indeterminate prison turns them into pro USA patriotic geniuses.

You missed the point. The point is he was an immigrant child put in a cage, yet, he was a valuable part of American history who wrote a song considered to be one of the most iconic representations of being American. So why are we treating other immigrants like they don’t matter?

Dude. The immigrants had and still have cultural enclaves. Ever been to Chinatown or Little Italy? Doesn’t mean they don’t love America. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I don’t have problem with that. But I grew up in California, the Bay Area, and those immigrant activists? They burn the American flag and wave the Mexican flag, and posters that say America was never great. In California schools you can’t wear a T-shirt with the American flag.
