40 languages? And we wonder why kids can’t count back change.

Really? You expect kindergarteners to count back change? Relax. In Canada, they'll all become reasonably fluent in English by Grade 2, and learn how to give change by Grade 4. And be smarter than you by Grade 6.

Your right shouldn't be no more than 18 in a class or around there but with budgets and shortages that's rarely the case. They are suppose to have an aid though to assist if they surpass a certain number of students.

I live in downtown Vancouver. Kids and parents pss by going to and from the elementary school just down the street. I hear dozens of languages spoken. As soon as they get to the playground, they instantly switch to English. Nearly every kid in that school is AT LEAST bilingual.

For those who think multiple languages destroy public schools, go to Europe. I personally studied 3 languages other than English - Span, Fren, Hin. I got multiple degrees in engineering, graduated from a top University and went to public school. Also, I'm an immigrant...

        1) Toronto isn't in New Jersey, so not yor schools. 2) Quite the opposite of your assumptions, Toronto's diversity is what makes it - and its schools - great.

There's no such thing as an unnecessary teacher. Or would you prefer the kids don't learn a common language? By Grade 3 or 4, they'll all be talking and playing together.

If the end goal is fluency in English, then that’s great. Or French, if we were talking about Montreal. With all the multiculturalist ideology outlets like the NYT push, I jumped to a cynical conclusion. Thanks
