The family of Christopher Cruz, 22, paid more than $12,000 for him to be smuggled into the U.S. from El Salvador. Cruz was fleeing violence and what he said was near-certain death at the hands of local gangs. https://nyti.ms/2KlwBQL pic.twitter.com/VFoWfB7u8u

Even with his family’s payment, Cruz slept amid filth and vermin. He watched guides abandon migrants who couldn’t keep up, while others were forced to become drug mules.https://nyti.ms/2KlwBQL

Throughout their journey, Cruz and fellow migrants were at the mercy of a smuggling network and cops who expected bribes to let them pass. Only a fraction made it to the other side. https://nyti.ms/2KlwBQL pic.twitter.com/BE2MaQFkVG

With all due respect for the struggle and need- once you cross the boarder - you’ll then become one of those undocumented and raise a family - then make your kids cry when our authorities find you and deport you! Then another story of how cruel our country is will be told! Thanks

A million dollar fine per illegal hired would solve the problem, current employers hire under "independent contractor" and the owners are only subject to a $100 dollar fine when caught.

Maybe we should stop spending on our ships & bombs & find a way to help those in South America, actually help end the violence in their countries to help our immigration issues, but no locking up babies in cages is easier right 🤷🏻‍♀️
