The family of Christopher Cruz, 22, paid more than $12,000 for him to be smuggled into the U.S. from El Salvador. Cruz was fleeing violence and what he said was near-certain death at the hands of local gangs. https://nyti.ms/2KlwBQL pic.twitter.com/VFoWfB7u8u

Even with his family’s payment, Cruz slept amid filth and vermin. He watched guides abandon migrants who couldn’t keep up, while others were forced to become drug mules.https://nyti.ms/2KlwBQL

As the number of Central Americans arriving at the southern border or sneaking across it has surged, the Trump administration has embraced even tougher measures, including a “zero tolerance” policyhttps://nyti.ms/2KlwBQL

Throughout their journey, Cruz and fellow migrants were at the mercy of a smuggling network and cops who expected bribes to let them pass. Only a fraction made it to the other side. https://nyti.ms/2KlwBQL pic.twitter.com/BE2MaQFkVG

For Cruz, the harrowing journey of crossing the U.S. border and paying thousands of dollars to smugglers to get him there was all worth it https://nyti.ms/2KlwBQL pic.twitter.com/i2oWlMeCS8

Dear @nytimes: to claim this is to have no understanding of the way smuggling operates. It is an easy way to explain a significantly more complex activity. Ask researchers for feedback, we are as interested as you are to get out the right story!

I have to ask an obvious, albeit sincere, question. If they can afford this kind of money to get into the U.S. illegally, why wouldn't they be able to relocate to a safer place within their own country? What am I missing here?
