The internet has turned on him, his book sales are down and the TV adaptation of his last novel has stalled. But Jonathan Franzen wants you to know one thing: He’s not even angry.https://nyti.ms/2txuzmf

He’s a major American novelist of our age, and also managed to sell a lot of books in the process. The fact that he doesn’t really care about social media and Amazon reviews and what TV does with his books makes me like him even more.

Dear New York Times, I read three paragraphs of this article and then lost interest. I still know nothing about Jonathan Franzen. Please hire better editors. Sincerely, etc.

Franzen is an author I feel I’m “supposed” to read because he gets so much attention from NYT and the New Yorker but I’ve never had any interest in his work

My favourite line from that piece: "Writing a novel — you alone in a room with your own thoughts — might be the only way to get a maximal kind of satisfaction from your creative efforts. All the other ways can break your heart."
