Remember the "ecce homo" painting in Spain that was called one of the worst restoration projects in modern history? It has new competition.https://nyti.ms/2MpmQxv

On behalf the Spanish Conservator-Restorers Association ACRE we'd like to highlight THIS IS NOT A http://RESTORATION.It 's an attack to our Cultural Heritage.Priest from Church did not respect protocoles. The person who damaged this sculpture is not a Conservator-Restorer.

ACRE, as a legitimate representative of a big group of spanish profesional conservators, has shown our indignation at this event. We denounced the attack against the art heritage. This is not a restoration but the consequence of ignorance and negligence. 😥😡

We will be very pleased to show how profesional conservators work in Spain. In a few days will take place the presentación of the restoration of the romanesque Pórtico de la Gloria at the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral #SOSHeritage #ConservatorsPridehttps://twitter.com/restaur_accion/status/1011359240403988485?s=19 …

just to clarify, THIS WAS NOT DONE BY A CONSERVATOR. Neither the handicrafts teacher or the responsibles of the church, consulted a conservator or asked for the premises required, by law, to undertake a conservation treatment of the sculpture. It was an ILEGAL intervention 😓

There are many very knowledgeable and qualified conservators in the country, mortified and terrified by this, and who are demanding an improvement and an increase of control of the heritage and the professional intrusion.

Perhaps the restoration artist was trying to make the statute appear as if it was painted originally?

But back when the statute was originally painted, would it look like it does now? And if that is the case, is it better to be historically accurate than ascetically pleasing?

How does anyone know how it originally looked? Perhaps just in the restorer's eye? I am not saying I am right, just trying to find an excuse why the restorer would do such an obvious patch work job?

I think the artist wasn't skilled enough to take on a task like this. I think he tried his best, but his best just was nowhere close where it needed to be for something like this.

Strange they would hire such an inept artist for such an important task - reason why I keep wondering if it was deliberate?
