A sad day. We can point to McConnel's breaking with norms by holding up Garland's nomination as the first action in the constitutional crisis that is going to unfold - and the crumbling of US democracy. No one is going to out a check on Trump's authority.

Hardball? As usual you’re far too soft on Republicans, while you smack the rest of us for inelegant anger. Fuck hardball, it was authoritarian, McConnell overstepped his authority & it should have elicited much more outrage in the press. Maybe then he could have been stopped

The Republicans STOLE the Supreme Court position after Scalia’s death. In an unprecedented move, they blocked an up or down vote on Garland for a year to run out the clock. Now paying off for them. Now Republicans have the balls to say Dems are obstructionists?

Ripped off, disenfranchised, stolen, whatever term you use, Mitch McConnell screwed the American judicial system by making it political. Shame

Stop writing articles like this until you learn to use words like “unconstitutional” and “illegal” instead of “hardball”. Heed the words of the man you called “the father of the modern New York Times”, Adolph Ochs:pic.twitter.com/ARJM0KYBsS

Straining Democracy to the breaking point totally pays off! Who knew restricting the rights of minorities and women could be so simple. Breaking our Democracy is a small price to pay for such wins. Much to celebrate today!

Lara, forcing prolife cli ics to promote abortion is facist not freedom. The folks coming from abroad are the same ones obama banned in 2011-12. Put ur outrage in check. Stop being pathetic and desperate

It's not about pushing through his agenda. It's about fulfilling their basic job as laid out in the Constitution. If they had held hearings on the nomination and voted it down, the left wouldn't have a leg to stand on here. Instead they were cowards who hid behind a made-up rule.

Dems would never vote on a GOP SCOTUS nom w/ less than a year left in presidency. And you know it.

Stay on topic, comrade troll - As Justin correctly tells you - it's a Constitutional requirement. The GOP chose to ignore the law and their duty. Your hypothetical "point" is neither here nor there, as Dems never chose to completely ignore a sitting presidents SCOTUS pick.

And to think: they would've gotten the same results had they put forth a more sane choice, such as John Kasich... And they would've done so without having destroyed their party and fractured the nation.
