Gotta love that word "generally", which is way more vague and unclear than people would like it to be and can probably be expanded to mean just about anything. Awesome.

@rebelcinder "government *generally* needs a warrant" -
This confused me. Especially because the chief justice is quoted saying "a warrant is required in the rare case..."

I'm working my way through the (lengthy) ruling this morning.
@Restore_The4th filed an amicus brief in the case, and we're very pleased with the outcome; here's our Litigation Chair talking about it:https://www.kare11.com/article/news/scotus-adopts-new-rules-for-cellphone-tracking/89-566775789 … -
Glad to hear it! The way it was written up in NYT was a bit confusing

Couple things I didn't understand 1) why didn't the article say who voted how? 2) why did the author say "generally needs a warrant" when the chief justice wrote "a warrant is required in the rare case". Interesting though, I didn't know there was so little protection for texts.
-
The article did state who voted, and how. The majority was made up of the four liberal justices along with Chief Justice Roberts.
-
you're right, it did.
