He came to the U.S. from Mexico when he was 13, and got his green card in the 1980s, his family said. Now, immigration officials have put him in jail because of a misdemeanor conviction from nearly 20 years ago.https://nyti.ms/2JJMTCN

Likely because he has a misdemeanor conviction from 20 years ago.... or because it’s expensive.

He was over 40! That left him 25+ years to apply!

You CAN‘T just get citizenship with prior convictions. It’s not a matter of not wanting or trying. The law prevents those with certain crimes on their records from obtaining citizenship.

I am guessing you mean legal resident, not legal citizen. Citizenship can't be revoked by commiting a crime, this guy is a legal resident and I am not sure about that one. Would have to be more than a misdemeanor I guess

Thank you for saying this. People believe everything the media report. A misdemeanor would not stop him from getting his citizenship it is more to the story.

No it wouldn't. I am an immigrant myself and know the system, also know many people that got DUI's etc and went on to become citizens. This does not add up. If they are going after green card holders now they will throw us into a recession

Green card in the 80’s but never took the oath of citizenship?! Am I missing something?

Maybe he just didn't apply, green cards have no time restrictions, just get a new one every 10 years. No requirement to become a citizen

Well that's a great use of taxpayer $. We already lock up hundreds of thousands of people for bullshit minor crimes what's one more, eh? Being tough on crime & immigration sure works well especially the war on drugs. It keeps people from doing drugs. Oh wait no it doesn't. Damn,

2176 permanent residents were forced to give up their green cards during the 1st travel ban. This was never about the security or the law. It was always about the race. The white race...
