Once women return from maternity leave, many become second-class citizens. The dynamic helps explain why women consistently earn less than men regardless of their qualifications.https://nyti.ms/2JJ0FFU

There's an epidemic of discrimination against pregnant women, period. That is, in fact, a new thing.

I was called "selfish", by a man, for having a child. "People only have children to satisfy themselves, people shouldn't have children, you people are selfish". I support his freedom of speech and of being a misogynist full of hate.

I was discriminated against starting with my first pregnancy. Rave reviews until then and then treated horribly as I battled morning sickness for 4 months and bed rest for the last. Told I wasn't pulling my weight even after working from home 3 weeks after delivery.

You are the majority in every country around the world and yet you can’t vote this out - women should and must, stop suffering in silence and act and vote for your rights.

It’s almost like being a good mom requires time and at the same time being a successful employee requires that same time. If only we had some way of splitting that workload up between raising good kids and having professional success...

How much time does it take to be a good dad?

Same amount of time it takes to be a good mom: More than somebody chasing a successful career is able to give, regardless of gender. The choices both men and women make in terms of prioritizing this time is different for the vast majority of people.

It's not an epidemic-it's Constitutionally mandated subjugation. NY Times shd champion the #ERA, not just write stories about what happens w/o equality. We've known about those for 100 years. Expose the people who are lobbying to prevent ERA ratification! @EqualMeansEqual

They leave their jobs for 3+ months while someone else is doing it for them maybe even better than they were doing it when they left and then come back and expect to walk in the door and have it exactly as it was when they left. That’s just not realistic even vets know better

I may have gotten the same pay level job when I returned from maternity leave, but it was NOT the same job responsibilities that I had prior; not the same duties I was initially hired to perform & a job I hated enough to quit.

Sorry, this sounds like more of the same argument. Isn't it strange how this "issue" persists after how many years of awareness and legislation? As long as women are birthing children, and accepting the role of motherhood, their profile as workers will be different from men.

Without childbirth/childrearing we would have no future workers (much less, skilled/ educated ones) and where would our economy be? These women play an important function in our economy and contribute to a public good, but they are punished for it. It's systemic exploitation.
