This is a direct result of schools failing to teach 20th century history. I had to explain to a young relative the other day why naming a pet hamster “Josef Gerbils” was not okay. A lot of kids don’t have an appreciation for the evil of Nazism.

“Make the lie big, keep it simple, keep saying it and eventually they will believe it”. I am Jewish and my father fought the Nazis, but... it is hard to imagine a more appropriate quote for these times, no matter what the origin.

Who cares who said it. Wether it was said by MLK or JFK or Hitler. It’s still an awful quote for a young man and student to make. Why was it allowed in the first place?
-
Because we have the first amendment...
-
Yes we do. You have the right to express yourself and no one put him in jail so he is protected by the 1st amendment. It does not mean you can write a offensive saying in a high school year book that has rules.
-
Are you offended that he said lie big? Because either way, it doesn’t matter. He can say what he wants, seeing as how a public high school is a public forum.
-
I’m not offended at all. I just think there is a time and place for things to be said. I wish respect and decency would make a come back. I’m tired of everyone opinion. Including my own.
-
In that case, Matt, keep it to yourself
-
LOL. ok I will.

His quote was a straightforward description of our current government's behavior. Was he quoting it approvingly, or as a warning? I would have left it. If the kid approves of totalitarian methods, that should be on the record. If he was warning us, let that be on the record.

This seems more like an ominious and apt warning than anti-semitism. Isn't this the best distillation of how Trump operates?
-
Agreed and i think that’s what the kid meant based on the school’s response

I suspect this kid is not in favor of nazi rhetoric. Instead seems like apt political commentary on the current U.S. presidential administration's attitude towards facts.

The quote should be taken as whether it has any value in its meaning or not, not who bloody wrote it! Otherwise "I went to the toilet this morning" could be seen as an inspirational quote because so and so great person said it.

It's great that we don't want to be associated with Nazis. So why do we print the words of modern day Nazis like Trump and the White Supremacist crowd. We don't like Nazis.

Our democratic principles have been eroded through dark money, gerrymandering, voter suppression, use of govt resources by GOP to propagate false scandals, and in Trump's case, use of foreign money and efforts to subvert the will of the people. That's not western democracy!

Gerrymandering, yes, both sides to some degree but primarily GOP, only party that attempts to suppress votes. Why? They want power and to maintain power rather than be a true representative government. Voter ID laws are always GOP. False claims of voter fraud. Trump is the fraud

You are cynically wrong. What is happening now is corruption like never before. False claims of corruption against Hillary while Trump won't reveal the taxes he promised he would, his fraudulent charity, money laundering, wire fraud and much more. This is not "both sides."
