McDonald's is getting rid of plastic straws at its restaurants in Britain, as more businesses there pledge to reduce their use of plastichttps://nyti.ms/2t3GesI

How flipping hard is it to drink from the cup without a straw?

I don’t mean to call out, but I do want to raise awareness that for a lot of people (like me!) with a disability, it’s basically impossible to drink without a straw. Paper straws definitely aren’t ideal - they shred and aren’t flexible like plastic ones are (1/2)

And sustainability/the environment are incredibly important but these are big changes being made quickly without considering the views of a major part of the population. Changes made should be inclusive, not exclusive. (2/2)

There are ads out already for companies selling collapsible metal reusable straws, etc. If you need one, bring it with you as an aid when you order drinks.

But if I order multiple drinks at a restaurant (water, coffee, a cocktail, etc.), I then have to bring multiple collapsible straws. And that’s assuming that the metal straws are tall enough to reach the bottom of the McD’s cup (many aren’t)...(con’t)

I also can’t clean them out myself, so I have to carry them home sticky and dirty. Where do I put them then? And not every person with a disability is able to use a metal straw - there’s a very different level of flexibility w/ metal than w/ plastic. (Con’t)

McD’s could start asking everyone to bring their own silverware rather than provide plastic cutlery if they wanted to make a diff environmentally - but they never will because of the convenience! Straws are like that but even more than just a “convenience” for me and others.

Come on, McDonald's could still have straws for these cases. My idea is for the rest of people who actually don't need straws.
