FIFA never cared too much about human rights abuses. Italy hosted the tournament in 1934 and won it as a fascist totalitarian dictatorship under Mussolini. Argentina hosted and also won it as a right-wing military junta under murderous dictator Videla in 1978.

I’m watching the game. But Putin fixed the Olympics in Russia. Now the WC is in Russia...hard to believe he didn’t try to also do something to make the team get a leg up. Sorry, anything he’s involved in (including Russian soccer) is tainted now.

That's a super silly opinion about this. Like, forgive me if I'm wrong, but you either didn't watch the game, or don't know much about football. I distrust Putin as much as the next guy, but Saudi Arabia just sucks at the sport, and Russia isn't terrible at it.

My comments r more about Putin and how he acts as Russia’s “leader” than the actual quality of Russian soccer. I just can’t enjoy watching Russia play, knowing how untrustworthy Putin is when it comes to trying to make his country win. And to see him presiding over a game...yuck.

I play soccer & enjoy watching it. But I was a little sick to my stomach watching the game today bc of Putin’s Olympics record, his meddling in the US election, & Trump’s blind support of him — now he gets a chance to “showcase” his country during this amazing event. Again, yuck.

If you can't separate sport from politics, you have personal issues you need to sort out.

It's Putin who can't separate the 2. & if I can't help thinking of politics when a country that attacked America & supports Syria gets positive attention then that's just how I think, it's not a personal issue. I don't think you have issues for being able to keep them separate.
