Women can wear pants at the Oscars, while graduating from the Naval Academy, and at just about any workplace in America. But not while performing at the New York Philharmonic.https://nyti.ms/2JAKLx2

Why are we women still allowing someone to tell us what we can wear & when?

They aren't required to work there. Yankee baseball players can't have beards. What's the difference? Nobody is forcing them to stay.

What does making a woman wear pants have anything to do with her job performance. Seems to me that the best person for the job doing their best should always be the bottom line.

Making them wear pants likely has nothing to do with job performance. But the organization has a dress code just like my job. I don't get to wear what I want although it may not have anything to do with my performance. Open up an orchestra and let woman wear pants. Problem solved

What is the purpose of not allowing them to wear pants?

You'd have to ask them. I just don't think we should tell entities how to run their business.

I get what you're saying & get that for appearances sake,an orchestra might want color coordination. I don't understand making women wear dresses--or making men wear pants, for that matter. Just wishing for a perfect world, in which superficial values wouldn't be imposed upon us.

Independet from that topic. I've been to many philharmonic concerts. Has anyone ever seen a left handed string musician? 🧐

Of course, that makes sense on one hand. But I guess there is a way to solve that problem by arrangement of seats etc... Nevertheless I haven't seen any :)

Makes sense for violines in a row. But imagine two contrabasses next to each other. I see no practical reason why both have to be right handed, as their bows can't bother each other at all :)

Ok, thx for explaining. Really had no idea why it is like this, but kept asking myself almost everytime I've been to a concert :)
