I feel society has it backwards. The wedding should be a spare affair and anniversaries should progressively get more lavish.

Big marriages are just a waste of money and an attempt to show off to a shit ton of strangers and family members you never talk to. Best to save that money for your honey moon and have a small wedding with close relatives and family members.

I don’t know why this seems so difficult. You set a budget then fit your expenses into that budget. There are plenty of ways to have a very nice wedding for limited funds.

Good for them for controlling costs. It’s just one day, if a very special one, and having it be a day that taught them that compromise can be positive is a great way to start a marriage.

Why should POC folk have to be forced to comply with white societal standards? Weddings are only for white men who want to stay in power and marry into power.

Weddings have gone from simple gatherings to elaborate over the top expensive affairs. The rich can afford it and they set the high mark. Then middle class or poor women dream that they can have an unreasonably extravagant wedding and the wasted party money could go for a house.
