If she was being treated for severe depression, yet her husband says there was no indication or warning, something isn't right.
-
Many people are treated for severe depression. It doesn't mean they're on suicide watch.
-
morbidity rate is 4 - 5 x's higher and so anyone you know that is suffering with it or has been "diagnosed" - you have been made aware. Do you have to be on pins and needles...no, but awareness and empathy of family are helpful and even then...
-
Hi. Person with severe depression here. Many times when people with depression are in a "light phase", we seem normal to people. But then out of nowhere we can sink again. Many people who commit suicide are actually very happy before hand. So it is very hard to know.

It's not his fault and it's not her fault. Mental illness happens. She was being treated. Above all, it is never the fault of the child. I really hope the child grows up loved and supported and knowing it is not her (the child's) fault.

This sound like one of those
@LifetimeMovies ! J/S he was home when it happen, suicide note seems shifty it's released & he issues a statement less than 24hrs after. Naw bruh! Also, he made sure to say WE loved creating our businesses together i.e. angling for that top spot & $$$pic.twitter.com/du7X7JPeU6 - 1 more reply

"Died of suicide." Interesting phrase. Is that the new NYT style guideline?
-
It’s the most accurate and responsible way to report how she died. Died as a result of depression would have been ok too.
#EndStigma -
Honestly asking; is "committed suicide" or "took her own life" no longer acceptable?
-
Thanks for your curiosity and info seeking! Here’s an article that helps explain why language matters.https://www.speakingofsuicide.com/2017/09/21/suicide-language/ …
-
Thanks for the article. I'm a journalist so I definitely care about words and their meanings. I think the AP Style book says that "took her own life" is also acceptable. Accurate but less stigmatizing
-
It’s not “wrong” but advocates will argue it does stigmatize. The depression, trauma, despair, etc took their life. “Took their own life” can be interpreted that they felt they had another choice in that moment.
-
Can't it be dangerous to imply that they didn't have another choice though? Shouldn't the message be that there are alternatives? I honestly don't know the answer
-
If talking about prevention and awareness-yes, please highlight alternatives! A suicidal person does not want to die. They want reprieve from their despair & see no other option in that moment. Respectfully for them, & others suffering, died by suicide is preferred.

“Severe depression” IS the indication and the warning. If you know someone is suffering, reach out.
