The principal is wrong. It doesn't prove anything of the sort. How many of us know every possoble quote and are able to attribute each of them correctly? It's not a particularly famous quote. It may prove (or suggest) other things but not that people don't read or pay attention.

They weren’t paying attention in the sense they were reacting when they heart Trumps name and bet that before his name was mentioned only a very small handful might have remembered the quote. Tribalism at its worse.

While there was likely (perhaps obviously) tribalism, it was reflex tribalism but hardly tribalism at its worst. It's exactly what people of all tribes might be expected to do during a high school graduation speech. It's not exactly the moment when everyone is most focused.

I agree that it was reflexive.

They cheered because the quote was humorous. Doesn't matter who said it.

The quote by President Obama is not and was not meant to be humorous. It was a serious call to action. They cheered, likely, because it was a good quote AND they thought it came from someone they support.

But they didn't know the context in which the quote was said. Atleast to me this sounded like something Trump will say. The point is that why is this a news? Surely if you quote out of context, you can make Trump look like a scholar.

So lying is bad when Trump does it, but good when the valedictorian does it, right? And Trump's critics are reduced to laughing their asses off at high school remarks and late night comics? Wow, never thought Trump could win this big this fast.

Yeaaah cause he immediate said it was Obama’s quote after so technically he didn’t lie and only an idiot would hold an 18 year old high school graduate to the same standard as the Cheeto in charge!!! You’re a trump supporter so I know you don’t “THINK” that’s problematic!!!

It proves we are living in a time of iPhones, nanotech, and instant messaging, yet tribalism continues to shape our sense of self and identity for the worse.
