Instead of spending a ridiculous amount of $ on 4-year colleges, tell your kids to get off their asses and go get an Associates degree for a trade job from the local community college. Cheaper! Shorter! Loans paid off much faster!https://www.npr.org/sections/ed/2018/04/25/605092520/high-paying-trade-jobs-sit-empty-while-high-school-grads-line-up-for-university …

Back in HS I applied to a few Ivy League schools. Only applied bc of a bet from a classmate; he'd buy me 1 pack of cigs per Ivy League acceptance. After 2 apps I was done bc that shit is tediously boring. I got 2 packs of cigs. Advice: Don't waste your time & $ on Ivy League

You do your best in school, take AP and Honor classes join a few clubs and test well. That's about 80-85% the rest are the applications and such.

We're just digging into this now w/my 11th gr daughter - it feels unnecessarily complicated & a bit like a scam. Families pay for exotic trips so their kids have meaningful life experiences to write about, then SAT/ACT prep classes are $$$$, essay coaches, consultants...too much!

What exotic trips? I've read admission essays about people just describing their home life or community in new and interesting ways and they got accepted.

College has become a milking machine for students and their families' bank accounts. It's gross. Tuition's inflation surpasses any other major product or service.

Don't undervalue comm colleges. Classes are often taught by professors from local 4 yr colleges moonlighting. Encourage community service & volunteer work durng breaks. This will all add to a resume later, making it a good investment of time.
