New York City is taking away about 300 parking spots in more than a dozen neighborhoods, mostly outside of Manhattan, and reserving them exclusively for vehicles from car-share companieshttps://nyti.ms/2H71xho

These are parking spaces, so it's to keep people from doing what you're describing.

In theory car sharing reduces the number of needed parking spots in a city....

Though I suppose the Subway needs to also work for that to matter.

Great! This will allow more people to ditch their personally-owned cars. Do it, people. It's liberating.

Always love it when read about government redistributing for the greater good. I thought the beauty of ride sharing was that they are MOBILE?

I'm sure not one bribe passed through anyone's hands. That's fine. New Yorkers get screwed again so some company can get rich.

A majority of households in these neighborhoods don’t own cars so most New Yorkers aren’t actually getting screwed — they’re benefitting by not needing to own a car and being able to drive when necessary.

No. Because there is still only a limited number of car parking spots. Cars take up a lot of space and so even though only a minority own cars, given that it’s free, they’ll always be virtually all taken.

This is a fabulous idea. It's like the Diamond Lane system in southern California. Rewarding better behavior.

From what I've seen, every other city that's done this has seen parking spots free up as a result. Glad to see NYC taking some steps to help solve neighborhood parking issues and increase access to shared vehicles.
