In some American cities and towns, recycling is ending up in landfills after China decided not to import it anymorehttps://nyti.ms/2IUBDmz

Recycling is the worst case scenerio after exhausting other options like, reuse and reduce.. be the change you want to see in the world..

Agree but burning trash and landfilling is much much worse. Don’t conflate problems w/ recycling w/ the horrors of burn and bury.

I wonder, as I'm running recyclables thru the dishwasher or hand-scrubbing bottles and jars, is there *any* net positive to this considering the water, electricity, and detergent consumed, and wastewater produced? The market for glass is zero and plastic close to it.

Check with your local public works to find out where recyclables are going and if you need to do all that washing. A quick rinse usually suffices.

In Poland, which is facing a similar problem, there is now a wave of "accidental fires" on landfills (over 60 in recent weeks).

Blame trump I suppose I couldn’t get through first paragraph, as far as paper at times it’s cheaper to chop down the tree, the paper market fluctuates. So much so I use to recycle my boxes no the place won’t take them, last three years

Why don't they process recyclable materials in the U.S.?

They do and can. China’s economy was booming and paid good money for our mixed recyclables. A lot of US manufacturers couldn’t compete and closed. Manufacturers want clean materials. Time to encourage more US plants. Buy recycled content products. It helps drive demand.

The results of another great Trump idea. If Trump keeps making America great again, no one will be able to live on the planet.

I have been here. It's not due to tariffs or whatever you are assuming. It's due to impurities in the recycled goods we are sending. Trust me.

And the government requirements, those Trump removed by executive order, does not hold recycling plants accountable for the % of impurities. Additionally, tariffs and Trump comments led to China reducing the amounts of impurities from 5% to .05%.

that's a limiting way of thinking, as business owners its part of our job to be more creative and innovative, and as americans even more so
