"We are at risk of choking our oceans in plastic, with a knock-on effect on our food chain and human health," said the vice president of the European Commission. "It's in the air, it's in our oceans, it's in our food, and also in our bodies."https://nyti.ms/2IT5hJ1

We could just make all our plastic out of hemp. It doesn't solve the current clean up problem but in the long run at least it's biodegradable

I have to hand it to you. I've been to a lot of beaches in my time. Not once have I seen anything like this one. What percentage of world beaches look like this? How do you know the ocean is choking?

What beaches, at a resort? I've walked in shorelines in Africa, Portugal, Canada and Australia and all have debris and plastics after the tides recede...

Let's be clear. You've seen debris and plastic on beaches at all of those locations to the point where you cannot walk on the beach without stepping on garbage, like this picture? This picture doesn't just show one or two pieces of debri. This is just not normal...not even close.

I absolutely have walked on beaches that have debris spread on them, yes. It's not a rarity.

Perhaps good to consider all that plastic which wraps pretty much all of our food and drink, whether produce bags or meat, baked or dry goods, not to mention most consumer products in general. This move is tiny compared to that, right?

Just another anti-life legacy of the big oil era. Plastic is ancient sunshine, carbon dioxide and photosynthesis from 50 million years ago (oil), processed into non-bio degradable devices for our throw-away usage. Reaping what we sow, and killing the planet in the process.

Why is this not front and center of everyone's concerns? Most other issues should take a backseat to this.

Not just plastic, we need to completely and comprehensively move away from the "use n throw" culture. Inculcate re-use and recycle. The developed world could possibly draw some inspiration from the developing world.
