"Austerity isn't a necessity," a general practitioner said. "It's a political choice, to move Britain in a different way. I can't see a rationale beyond further enriching the rich while making the lives of the poor more miserable."https://nyti.ms/2GYjs9G

The ones that have nothing or little are paying for the one escaping taxes while they pileup billions in offshores.

It's a choice in the USA, too. We could very easily have a harmonious and civil society with unconditional basic income and universal health care, but we choose to not do that.

It isn’t a necessity. They could just keep makeing debt at the expense of future generations. Let it be their problem.

This article was not balanced. It barely mentioned the dangers of deficit spending. Austerity is a necessity because the UK has been living beyond its means. Full stop.

What an idiot, this general practitioner. The policies of "what me worry" and "avoid austerity" are what have damaged the poor the most. Further increases in the various debt levels will cause even MORE damage. Why are these guys ever even quoted?

Reconsider Britain! Downward cycle in the States. Inflation crazy. Minimum wage set in ‘09 - $7.25/hr. Crime and unemployment SPIKE. Depression up, leads to substance abuse. A mom puts 7yr old into prostitution. Middle class & Seniors ANGRY at welfare recipients, yet pay poorly.

On the plus side, we have paid maternity and free universal health care. And no deficit. How's the USA looking on those fronts? Asking for a friend.
